Affectionally known at the 'Vin de Liqueur' or 'Mistelle' of the Cognac region, Pineau des Charentes is produced from blending one-quarter Eau de Vie of Cognac to three-quarters freshly squeezed grape juice, creating a winning combination of fresh fruit and brandy warmth with a gentle spirit-kick.
The style most commonly experienced is pale gold, sweet and floral, reminiscent of tinned-peach syrup, rendered uncloying by a spirited kick. Sparkling and Red complete the picture.
Older wines labelled Vieux (at least 15 years old) and Très Vieux (at least 30 years old), are smooth and full bodied. The spirit mellows and richer prune, cinnamon and almond flavours develop. As it matures, white Pineau turns a dark golden colour with amber highlights whilst red Pineau turns a dark ruby colour with hints of copper.
